Place to see: Notre-Dame Basilica, Montréal, Canada

About this place:

Notre-Dame Basilica in the old town district of Montreal opened in 1829. It was the largest religious edifice in North America at that time. The Sulpicians chose a Neo-Gothic style, and assigned the task to a Protestant architect from New York, James O'Donnell. He later converted to Roman Catholocism so that he could be buried beneath "his" church.

The interior of the Basilica was redone under the direction of Victor Bourgeau in the 1870s. It features finely sculpted polychrome wood decorated in gold leaf and sculptures by Louis-Philippe Hébert and Henri Bouriché. The star-spangled vault, a masterpiece of decorative art, tops off this beautiful cathedral, one of the many beautiful sites in Montreal.
