Most people visit Cannon Beach for the grand vistas of expansive beaches and rocky pinnacles. But a closer inspection yields an ecosystem teeming with life. I awoke at sunrise to experience the beach at low tide in the solitude of the misty air. Exploring the tide pools around the base of Haystack Rock, I came across an acrobatic starfish, using its tube feet to hang vertically from the rock while simultaneously prying open a shellfish for breakfast.
