Il Campo

Il Campo

Cloudy afternoon at Il Campo.

About this place:

The Piazza Del Campo, or just Il Campo is the heart of old Siena. The sloping scallop shell shaped plaza is the main square of Siena and twice each year plays host to the Palio di Siena a breakneck horse race around the plaza where riders representing the various city wards compete for a silk banner and bragging rights.

The best gelato in Siena can be found in a little gelateria on the Campo. I do not remember the name, but it is the one with the massive plastic gelato cone statue in front of it, on the side where all the shops and restaurants are located. If you were to stand at the base of the plaza and looking at this side, the gelateria would be at about 11 o'clock. Highly recommended is a double cone of chocolate and raspberry.
