About this place:

The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone and has windows with stone bars. It passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the old prisons to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace.

    The Bridge of Sighs got its name from the prisoners that used to use it to cross into the prisons in the next building. As legend has it when the prisoners were sentenced to life or death in the palace, they would cross the bridge into the prisons in the adjoining building. Since it would be the last time they would ever see daylight, not to mention their beloved city of Venice the prisoners would let out on mournful sigh.
