In 1906 Sicilian immigrant Baldasare Forestiere started creating a vast underground complex of living quarters and gardens. His creation was modeled after the gardens and patios of Italy and at one point he had fountains and fishing ponds underground. As his fruit trees grew up, he had to cut holes in the ceiling to allow the trees to pop up to the ground above. Now you can tour the gardens as an excellent escape from the brutal heat of the central valley.
