About this place:
The Welland Canal links Lake Ontario with Lake Erie, permitting large ships - including the largest "lakers" -- to get beyond Niagara Falls and travel from the mouth of the St. Lawrence River right up to the industrial and resource ports of lakes Michigan and Superior.
