Place to see: Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Fort Macleod, Canada

Buffalo Plains

Buffalo Plains

We drove west across the plains of southwest Saskatchewan and southern Alberta until the mountains began to loom before us. Here, at the edge of the foothills, we climbed up to the cliff of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, where a museum now tells the story of centuries of the Blackfoot bison kill, and I turned to look back east once more.

About this place:

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, located where Canada's Rocky Mountains meet the Alberta plains, is the oldest and largest buffalo jump site in the world, used by the Blackfoot First Nations people for thousands of years. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
