Place to see: East Side Gallery, Berlin, Germany

Berlin Wall

Berlin Wall

The wall that once divided Berlin between East and West Germany is partially preserved as a giant outdoor art display. Only small sections remain today as the city of Berlin is undergoing a massive construction boom following reunification.

About this place:

One of the few remaining original sections of the wall that once divided Berlin in two. Since the fall of the wall, the area has been preserved as an outdoor art gallery. On the day of our visit, a school group was visiting the gallery and making sketches.

We visited the East Side Gallery on our last day in Berlin en route to the airport. We stopped at the train station and check our bags and set out to explore the wonderful outdoor gallery. The gallery was started shortly after the fall of the Wall in December, 1989. As we were there we passed a large group of school children that were there studying the art work, many of them with sketchbooks. As someone who grew up in the Cold War era, it was a very powerful experience to vist and touch this symbol of the former East German power.
