About this place:
The Polish town of Oswiecim is known to the world by its German name, Auschwitz. There are actually two camps that make up Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. Auschwitz I was originally an Polish military camp. When it became too small for the Holocaust prisoners, it became the administrative centre. Birkenau, or Auschwitz II, was the extermination camp. There were many smaller camps in the area.
