Pedestrian street in the center of Copenhagen
Scandinavia is blessed with an abundance of beautiful cities. But Copenhagen is arguably its most breathtaking. A city of spires, Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and is situated at the easternmost part of a country comprised of hundreds of islands.
There have been settlements in and around the area occupied by modern Copenhagen since the time of the Vikings, who initially called the area "Havn". It began to grow in importance from the 12th century on after it was fortified in 1167 by Bishop Absalon. Its excellent, protected harbor made it an important center of trade and commerce. Today it is perhaps one of the most cosmopolitan cities in all of Scandinavia with a significant population of foreign-born citizens living there. It is ranked among the richest cities in the world.
