The First National Park East of the Mississippi River

People have been drawn to the rugged coast of Maine throughout history. Awed by its beauty and diversity, early 20th-century visionaries donated the land that became Acadia National Park. The park is home to many plants and animals, and the tallest mountain on the U.S. Atlantic coast. Today visitors come to Acadia to hike granite peaks, bike historic carriage roads, or relax and enjoy the scenery.

    I grew up spending summers at Acadia, working as a volunteer climbing mountains and doing trail work. I remember being four years old, climging the mountains with strength and vigor, before reaching the top and seeing a view that resembled that of heaven. I could visit Acadia everyday and still not witnessed everything that the national park has to offer. After hiking, my family would hike down and go to our campsite where we made a campfire and told stories while munching on popcorn. Afterwards, we would go to bed in our trailer and dream of the days to come.
