Early morning hours are my favourite time of the day to explore a city. In most European cities smell of baking bread will guide you to a neighbourhood bakery like a magnet.
Originally built in 1898, this San Francisco landmark at the foot of Market Street was one of the busiest transit terminals in the world prior to the construction of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges during the 1930s. Ferry traffic declined dramatically thereafter, and from the 1950s until the mid-1990s, the Ferry Building was hidden behind an ugly elevated freeway. The freeway came down in 1994, and in 2004 the Ferry Building reopened after a massive renovation. Today the Ferry Building is home to an upscale food marketplace, while on Tuesdays and Saturdays it plays host to what may be the best farmer's market in America. (Check the website for exact schedules.) Ferry boats still depart from the building as well, so you can catch a ride to Sausalito, Alameda, or Vallejo.
Access to the Ferry Building is convenient via BART and Muni subways to Embarcadero station, the California Street cable car, or via the vintage F-Line streetcars that run between Fisherman's Wharf and the Castro District.
