Canyonside

Canyonside

Midway up the long canyon are long meadows surrounded by rock, peppered by trees and bracken. A river runs down the side of the canyon.

About this place:

The Long Canyon is one of many canyons in the Trinity Alps in north eastern California. The geology and flora and fauna are different from that of the Sierras.

Many canyons, including the Long Canyon, lead to alpine lakes. Having started late in the day, we never made it to the one at the top of the Long Canyon's, but instead stopped in the midst of a gorgeous vale, camping in a copse of redwood trees next to a clear cold creek.

I haven't gone backpacking many times, but the all uphill walk with pounds and pounds on my back was worth it to reach this beautiful spot. It was late in the year, so there was a bite to the air, and a fog crept up the valley along with us. As we set camp, the fog swirled and we got glimpses of the surrounding granite cliffs. The next morning, we woke to a stunning view. Hauling ourselves up the canyon's side the next day, we found even more. We had to leave too soon.
