Place to see: District 6, Cape Saint Francis, South Africa

About this place:

District 6, Cape Town (South Africa). I photographed the dismantling of District 6 during the Forced Removals carried out by the then Apartheid government. The District was located right next to Cape Town City and was considered to be a valuable commercial property. Thousands of people were removed, protesting, to the Cape Flats. Some have since returned to re-claim their property, to re-settle in what was a cosmopolitan suburb, created in the 1800's. The houses have gone, the Christian churches demolished, sparing only a few Mosques. I captured over 2500 slides of the area from 1978 to 1982. These images, and a few more, are all of what's left of the original collection, most of which were destroyed in a fire.
However, you can still visit District 6, and wonder about the District Museum in Cape Town. Good for the soul.
