Vrelo Bosne 1

A green oasis just outside of Sarajevo, BiH.

About this place:

Vrelo Bosne is a spring and beautifully green park at the source of the River Bosna, twelve kilometers southwest of Sarajevo in the suburb of Ilidža. If you don't have a car, it's best reached by taxi and can be combined with a visit to the War Tunnel Museum. The approach to the park down a long allée/aleja of tall trees is spectacular. Horse and carriage rides are also offered if you're more inclined to ride in. Fancy houses from the Austro-Hungarian period line the aleja, offering a peek into the luxuries of the past. The park itself is a network of paths and bridges over bubbling streams and waterfalls and still pools reflecting the leafy surroundings. It's filled with shade and perfect for a warm summer's day. It's also one of the greenest places on earth. Nearby is the Roman Bridge, also worth looking at. The park has outdoor cafés, which can get crowded on summer weekends, but stray from the beaten track a bit, and it's hard to imagine a more peaceful oasis. If you're spending any length of time in Sarajevo, Vrelo Bosne is a welcome break from the bustle of the city.

During our stay in Sarajevo, we taxied to the War Tunnel Museum, which is located in an unremarkable house on a tiny lane outside the city, near the airport. Seeing a portion of the tunnel gives outsiders a harrowing glimpse into the desperation and heroic resolve of ordinary people during wartime. After this experience, we continued to Vrelo Bosne. Given all the war destruction in the area, the natural beauty of Vrelo Bosne seems miraculous, from the long aleja of trees leading into the park to the sparkling clear waters that flow through the acres of emerald greenery.
