Salaš 137

Inside the quaint farm house dining room of Salaš 137, located near Novi Sad in the Vojvodina region of Serbia.

About this place:

Salaš 137, Čenej, is a farm (salaš) inn and restaurant near the city of Novi Sad in north-central Serbia. Traveling north from Belgrade, you enter Vojvodina, a mostly autonomous province of Serbia. The region is known for its diverse topography, from the broad Vojvodina plain to the hills of the Fruška Gora national park, which, in addition to containing lovely natural scenery, have a number of Orthodox monasteries open to the public. Novi Sad is a convenient hub from which to explore the region, but even more appealing are the remote farm house inns dotting the plain near Novi Sad. These inns, despite their simple, numbered names, take their food seriously, and because the region is also known for its wines, wine and gourmet food connoisseurs will leave well-satisfied, without breaking the bank. Salaš 137 is down a tree-lined drive in the tiny community of Čenej. (Getting directions beforehand is important!) They have comfortable accommodations in former farm buildings, as well as delicious breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. They have an Equestrian Club, as well as a Slow Food Club. A unique place to stay and dine in a unique corner of the Balkans.

It was pouring rain, cold, and we were lost in the middle of the Vojvodina plain. Finally, we found the tree-lined drive leading to our reserved accommodations for the night at Salaš 137. The inn is part of a network of farms in Serbia. Having a number for a name didn't inspire visions of luxury. And the inn wasn't fancy. But the comfy rooms (ours had 2 levels) and delicious homemade cuisine served in quaint dining rooms decorated with kitchen implements and old radios hit the spot. We were happy to stay till whenever the rain stopped.
