Inside the Empire Mine

This mine goes down at about a 50-60 degree angle. The miners road on something that looked like roller-coaster-ride-type seating.

About this place:

This gold mine was the largest and richest gold mine in California. It is also the oldest mine, but is no longer in operation. It is located near Grass Valley, CA, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California.

The property has all the original buildings and much of the original equipment for visitors to view. Also located on the site is the owner's cottage, a beautiful 4,500 sf home with lovely gardens, reflections pools and grass.

Our visit was too early in the season to fully enjoy the cottage gardens. It would be worth our while to return when the garden is in full bloom.

Guided tours through the cottage are offered once a day. Visitors are free to roam the rest of the park on their own. The property is now owned by the State of California and is beautifully preserved by the park system. The cost is about $3.00 per adult and less for children and seniors.
