Early morning is serene on Laguna Bacalar at Rancho Encantado. The dock invites swimming or relaxing in the hammocks in the shade later in the day when the sun is bright and warm.
Rancho Encantado is an eco-resort about 15 minutes from Chetumal, the capital of the state of Quintana Roo. It is located on the lapping shores of Laguna Bacalar in the unspoiled and untouched jungles of southwest Yucatan Pensinsula near the border with Belize. Laguna Bacalar is often called the "Lagoon of Seven Colors" for its intense shades of tropical tourquoise, with reflections of the deep emerald greens of the jungle lining its edges and the blueberry skies overhead.
The resort provides a calming retreat into Maya hospitality, without any sacrifices. Spa services include four-hand massages, herbal wraps and healing aroma therapies in a lake-side thatched hut. Trips to numerous newly-discovered and excavated Maya ruins can be arranged. Swimming and kayaking the lake is a joyously-secluded activity, since there are very few other resorts and no large developments on the expansive lake.
