Atop Gjirokaster's citadel lies, among the wet stone towers, a American Air Force plane Although it was supposedly triumphantly captured by the communists, some say it was simply broken and abandoned. The mayor of the town, however, had nothing to say on the matter when our school group was invited to an audience with him in 2006.
Built along the slopes of the Mali i Gjerë mountains and the banks of the Drinos river, Gjirokaster remains interesting today for its distinctive buildings, featuring houses with roofs made of carefully stacked flat stones. The historic center of the city was made a World Heritage Site, despite the new modern buildings constructed on its outskirts.
On a hill looking out over the town sits the 18th century Citadel, used as a prison during the communist regime.
