    Milford Sound is spectacular in any weather and at any time of day, but best appreciated on an overnight cruise: When the other tour boats have cleared out and the constant drone of light aircraft has died down, the fjord feels more serene, more primal, more ancient.

    At night, Milford Sound is patrolled by dolphins, puffing and snorting as they circle the boat - and lying awake in my bunk, peering out through a tiny porthole, I feel a childlike sense of joy at the thought of what else might be out there in the darkness.
