I visited the heavily gilded St Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersberg on a dreary spring afternoon.
St. Isaac's Cathedral is one of several large and gorgeous cathedrals that dominate Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersberg. It was built fairly recently, in the mid-1800's, and is unbelievabley ornate inside. The walls and ceilings are lavishly decorated with mosaics, paintings, and stained glass. It is now operated primarily as a museum.
