A detail from the large and ornately carved front doors of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St.

About this place:

St. Isaac's Cathedral is one of several large and gorgeous cathedrals that dominate Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersberg. It was built fairly recently, in the mid-1800's, and is unbelievabley ornate inside. The walls and ceilings are lavishly decorated with mosaics, paintings, and stained glass. It is now operated primarily as a museum.

Many people find St. Isaac's too gaudy for their taste, claiming that it feels more like a display of riches than a house of God. While I agree, I wouldn't have traded my afternoon in St. Isaac's for anything. I wandered in on a dreary, gray afternoon, and spent a while absorbing the colors and texture. Just as I had had my fill, the sun broke through the clouds and poured in to light up the central dome of the cathedral. The resulting streams of light reflecting off the gold trim were truly magical.
