Place to see: The Museum of Flight, Seattle, Washington, United States

"Red Barn"

"Red Barn"

reproduction of Boeing's original "Red Barn" where they constructed their first planes.

About this place:

A truly spectacular museum devoted to flight located next to The Boeing Company's Seattle factory.

From biplanes to segments of the International Space Station, this museum has something for all fans of flight. The main gallery houses full size sections of airliners, a complete SR-71 Blackbird (as well as an additional cockpit that you can climb inside of), fighters from various eras, and crazy car plane hybrids to mention a few. An entire wing is dedicated to the airmen and airplanes of the World Wars, while the early years of flight are presented in Boeing's original "Red Barn" factory building. Outside is a Concorde and Kennedy's Air Force One; both cabins are open for public viewing.

If you are even remotely interested in planes, plan to spend AT LEAST four hours here. You could easily spend an entire day and still not see everything. It's close to both downtown Seattle and the Sea-Tac airport area.

I've lived right down the street from here for nearly a year and one drizzly Sunday afternoon finally ended up wandering through this place. It was awe inspiring to walk down the aisle of an old Air Force One. I was surprised that the museum contained so much and gave people the opportunity to sit in a cockpit of a plane. Their WWI & II collection is impressive with some pretty great restorations. I enjoyed listening to live air controller chatter guiding planes in and getting a different perspective since I get to see them land everyday!
