Turku Castle in Turku, Finland was built in the 15th century on a small island in the estuarial waters of the Aura River. It is one of the oldest and largest castles of its kind in all of Scandinavia. It construction continued into the Renaissance. The castle has been the site of myriad battles and conflicts. It was bombed by the Soviets in the 1940's but has since been restored and is one of the most visited historic sites in all of Finland.
