Hunger Strike

Hunger Strike

Mural depicting Raymond McCartney, a central figure in the Northern Irish hunger strike.

About this place:

Ireland is a nation of spectacular wall murals, enromous works of public art that capture the best and worst of the country's history. The murals of Free Derry, in the northern city of Londonderry, are a chilling reminder of the country's divisive past and unsettled future. The murals mostly depict the height of violence between Irish Republicans and British Loyalists, the peak of which came in 1972. January 30 of that year is known as Bloody Sunday, after the deaths of 26 civil rights protesters.
