Saltsman's Hotel has taxidermy as part of the decor... While wood bark won't be on the menu, milkweed will be in season (in the spring) and it's great!
Saltsman's Restaurant occupies the historic Saltsman's Hotel (circa 1889) in Ephrata, New York of Fulton County. It originally opened in 1813 as Apollo Hall. Located in the Adirondacks, this hotel was once a destination for then-Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
This seasonal establishment, run by Jim and Tammy Subik since 1979, offers a familly-style fare passed down from the previous owners. Before that, it had been passed down through the Saltsman family. Fortunately for visitors, the Subiks learned all the original recipes from the Saltsman, keeping the menu authentic.
Among the favorites are the succulent veal and fried chicken, all served family style. But the side dishes that come with your meal are not to be missed, including their corn fritters and cole slaw salad. In season, you can even have the milkweed. Yep, I said milkweed (harvested young), and it is tasty!! Check out their full menu at http://www.saltsmans.com.
While waiting for your table you can also enjoy an expertly prepared beveraqe in their vintage bar. They are also known for using Kennedy half dollars for change...
You can find this special spot just 10 miles north of the NY State Thruway from Canajoharie or 10 miles west of colonial Johnstown, NY on Route 67.
Don't miss this off the beaten path favorite of visitors to Upstate New York and tell your friends! It's a personal favorite...
