Circa 1910, the Floyd Moreland Historic Dentzel/Looff Carousel operates year-round at the Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. The horses and other animals on this antique attraction are all hand carved and have been lovingly preserved. Some of the animals are well over 100 years old, dating from the 1890s. It is one of only two such carousels in the state. The music for the carousel is provided by a Wulitzer Military Band Organ, dating from 1923. Rides are $2 per person, although volume discounts are available.
William Dentzel and Charles Looff were both imigrants from Germany and eventually became well known makers of carousels in the United States. Among their works were the carousels in Coney Island, New York, Atlantic City, New Jersey and Long Beach, California.
Today, members of the Dentzel family have taken up the family tradition of carving carousel animals, reviving the family tradition. Examples of their latest work can be found at http://www.dentzeldesigns.com/intro.html.
