Goreee Island was used as a fortress and shipping point for slaves in the triangual slave trade between Europe, Africa, and the Americas from 1444 to 1815. It is located approximately 1.5km off the coast of Dakar, Senegal.
The island of Goree was occupied by Portugal in 1444. A fortress built that was used to house slaves during the triangular trans-Atlantic slave trade. Goree was one of the first slave fortresses in Africa and was a place of incredible inhumanity. Goree is an UNESCO world heritage site. It is located approximately one kilometer from the city of Dakar, Senegal.
