Place to see: Beachside Slave Forts, Ada, Ghana

Old British Fort, Ghana

Old British Fort, Ghana

Ghana was colonized by the British, and many of their forts remain today in various stages of decay. A number of the larger slave forts along the coast remain intact, but further from the main cities they have fallen into disarray.

About this place:

This old fort is along a red dirt road on the way to Busua, a tiny fishing village and beach town in southern Ghana. The main track from Accra to Busua will take you by it, although it is worth stopping and exploring the many areas around Busua and the other coastal towns. While the forts here are not as splendid (or as intact) as the one in Cape Coast, the villagers and general surroundings provide an intimacy that some of the more tourist-friendly areas lack.

Heading southwest from Accra, the capital city of Ghana, one will find many old slave forts from the days of the British colonization. There are some particularly interesting old ruins near Ada and Busua, both sleepy fishing villages worth stopping in. A spectacularly large fort still stands in Cape Coast, but these smaller old buildings (and the villages that surround them) out of the way provide a less touristy and more intimate experience.
