The first ascent is one of the steepest, but don't feel too self-satisfied as you look back at the next wave of hikers approaching from the valley floor. There's plenty more climbing to come.
Tongariro National Park was established in 1887 and was New Zealand's first national park. It has offers great hiking in summer and skiing in winter. The Tongariro Crossing is often referred to as the best one-day walk in New Zealand. Most people can complete it in 7 hours and volcano lovers will certainly not be disappointed. Movie buffs will recognize Mount Ngauruhoe as Mordor's Mt Doom and there are also emerald lakes and hot sulfur springs.
