The Gallery of Palaeontology and Comparative Anatomy, part of the various museums, research institutes, and zoos that make up France's National Museum of Natural History, is a far cry from most museums of a similar type.
Situated in a flowering botanical garden, I was attracted by the silhouettes of enormous spines I could see through the garden-side windows. Inside, I found a place that looks as though it hasn't been changed since the 18th century. Managing to be both macabre and strangely beautiful, the museum blends the line between science and art.
