This is a xiu mai (Vietnamese meatball pork) sandwich from the Saigon Sandwich shop in San Francisco. I think it's the best sandwich in the world, if not the entire universe.

This tiny little hole-in-the-wall is easy to miss, and it's in a gritty part of town, but it may well make the most delicious sandwiches in the entire world. Seriously. Not just the best sandwich in San Francisco. Not just in the USA. The entire galaxy. To taste one is to know pure perfection.
Vietnamese bahn mie sandwiches are famous for being delicious, but the ones from Saigon Sandwich are truly exceptional. Fresh ingredients, good bread, served warm. All that helps explain why you'll see line of locals snaking out the door each day during lunchtime. (It's takeout only.)
For omnivores, the xiu mai (called Vietnamese meatball pork on the plastic menu sign) is not to be missed. Best of all, this little slice of paradise is very affordable -- most sandwiches here cost just $2.75.
