The huge cooling towers of Jiangyou's coal power plant dominate the town's skyline, even when behind bamboo, canola and red brick. (Jiangyou China, March 2008)

About this place:

The coal power plant in Jiangyou is one of the town's main reasons for existing. That and the canola fields. The town is flat and pleasant to bike around and you always have cooling towers as a highly visible landmark making it difficult to get lost.

The power plant also has its own dedicated steam engine train that runs into and out of the plant every hour.

After much searching for bicycles our tour of the town began. The place with the tandem and tridem bikes had already rented out their tallest ones. At another place “less than a mile” up the road we dug through the tarps and back rooms for suitable cycles. They were creakier than they could have been but were worth the 1RMB ($0.17) we each paid. We rode through muck and up roads wrapped in yellow, our Chinese bicycles and their gearlessness and knee-hurtingness forcing us to go slowly and not worry.
