Just calmly sitting on the deck at Edisto Beach, we watched these boaters try to be super cool and pick up their friend on the shore. I often wonder who these people are who buy boats but do not know a thing about the ocean or boating. We saw this boat struggling not to be capsized in the surf, so we took them some buckets and some extra hands. Hard to believe, but they actually finally got out of the breaking waves and sped away. I think they were pretty embarrassed, or at least they should have been.

Edisto Island is the larger area surrounding Edisto Beach and has amazing history if you explore. 150 years ago, it housed summer plantation homes for Charleston's elite, trying to escape the stifling heat with coastal breezes. Sea Island cotton was developed there and because it had longer fibers, was sought all over the world and made Edisto growers rich. Tucked back many island roads are splendid plantations which can sometimes be rented for a wedding. There are lovely island churches; the Episcopal church has a large Tiffany window which Tiffany tried to buy back, but the little church refused.

No carnivals, boardwalk, or high-end stores. Edisto does not pretend to be upscale and does not seek it. Rather take your family here to restore calm, nurturing sounds and sights to your spirit. I have been there every summer for 50 years, so I will probably regret telling you about this magical part of the Atlantic Coast. Strangers wanted to dredge the marsh to build an amusement park, but Edistonians much preferred the natual wetlands where the herons and egrets rest on knarled branches, and then suddenly rise on an impulse only they acknowledge. The herons remain undisturbed.
