Place to see: Wade Edwards Memorial, Raleigh, North Carolina, United States

About this place:

Wade Edwards, the teenage son of Senator John and Elizabeth
Edwards died in 1996 in a car accident believed to have been caused by a sudden strong gust of wind. The family searched for ways to continue his legacy. At Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC,which he attended, they created a gathering place for students in his memory, named "A Place in Time." It was designed and executed by Raleigh artist, Thomas Sayre, who is internationally known for his sculptures. Sayre and the Edwards chose a 106 foot long representation of a comet, a comet which is known for being a brief display of a shining light. It represents not only Wade who died so young, but all the students who come and go for a short four years of their lives at Broughton.

A comet in concrete instead of a streak of light, a boy who died who deserved to live, a place to gather for those who survive but who will someday face the fading of their own bright lights, brave words of a fifiteen year old boy in the last year of his life, handprints of older kids that remind us of kindergarden--this is not a place of politics. We all know this place in our own losses and incomplete dreams and it serves as a reminder and motivator to all to shine brightly in whatever time they have.
