When the fog subsides, visitors to Bokor are rewarded with magnificent views of the southern Cambodian coast.
Bokor Hill Station sits atop a mountain of the same name, in what is now a national park. It is 42km from the sleepy riverside town of Kampot and a few hours south of the capital, Phnom Penh. Access is now blocked to Bokor due to road construction, however there are a few guides that have permission because they have the necessary 4WD trucks to tackle the muddy ascent. There are some creepy fog-shrouded ruins at the top including an old casino, hotel, and church. There are soldiers living in the abandoned buildings, tasked with cleaning up unexploded ordnance leftover from when the Khmer Rouge used Bokor as a strategic military base. There is also an old royal residence and an interesting waterfall. The views over the south Cambodian coast are stunning and the entire place is well worth the trip. Go soon however, as there are rumors that the old ruins will be leveled and a new resort will rise from the rubble. Call Jack from Sok Lim Tours (www.soklimtours.com) to experience this mysterious French colonial hill station abandoned in the 1970’s. Make sure you read the Everywhere article on Bokor as well:
