Place to sleep: Le Relais du Lyon d'Or, Angles-sur-l'Anglin, France

The Morning After

The Morning After

Still purring from a fine, multi-course, multi-wine evening in this 14th century former post house, the Relais du Lyon d'Or, we peek through the heavy curtains to find the sun is well on its way into the courtyard. Sad that we will have missed breafast, we ease our way into the day, and find - much to our surprise - breakfast waiting for us in the heavy wood-beamed dining room below.

About this place:

Located about a 30 minute drive east of Poitiers, in a quiet side street in medieval Angles-sur-l'Anglin, one of the prettiest villages in France (according to the tourist literature and me), this former Post house features an outstanding gourmet restaurant presided over by its friendly, English-speaking former vintner host. There is terrace seating for warm summer evenings in the courtyard; and 10 modern, comfortable, and quaintly decorated rooms offer lodging at affordable prices. Walks from the Relais lead through stone, flower-lined streets to a massive castle ruin overlooking a lazy river and a museum dedicated to Paleolithic cave carvings.
