It is part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The castle was built by the Moors, possibly between the 9th and 10th centuries, but a romantic renovation was carried out in the 19th century.

The breathtaking views from the castle includes the village of Sintra with its Royal Palace, and in the opposite direction the Pena National Palace.
