This is a view of the Isles of Scilly from the western end of St Martins.
Located just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly are a miniature tropical paradise in the north Atlantic. There are five larger inhabited islands, and many more smaller ones that are home to a vast array of wildlife.
You can reach the island by boat or helicopter from Penzance on the mainland, or by plane from Land's End, Newquay, Exeter, Bristol and Southampton to St Marys, the main island. Once on the islands, transport is by boat - each inhabited island has its own ferry service taking locals and visitors between the islands every day.
It is the perfect place for a laid back holiday in whatever kind of accomodation floats your boat. White beaches, clear blue seas, a limited number of visitors, especially on the four "off islands" (Tresco, Bryher, St Martins and St Agnes), and fabulous restaurants and cafes all combine to make an amazing place to stay. Although yes, it is still Britain, and it does rain, but then you should just make your way to Hell Bay on Bryher to watch the sea.
