Place to see: Cape Spear National Park, St. John's, Canada

Cape Spear, Newfoundland

Cape Spear, Newfoundland

The shoreline of Newfoundland is rocky and rugged. There are paths leading down to the water at Cape Spear.

About this place:

The oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador is located at the most easterly point of land in North America. It has been restored to its 1839 appearance and shows how a lightkeeper and his family might have lived in the mid-19th century. The Visitor Centre contains exhibits on the history of lighthouses and the tradition of lightkeeping. The site is surrounded by spectacular scenery and wildlife such as whales, seabirds and icebergs in season.

The lighthouse at Cape Spear, like all of Newfoundland, is often enveloped in thick fog. The fog comes and goes often and sometimes quickly here. It is one of the many memorable things about visiting Newfoundland. The people, though, are the best part of "The Rock", as natives often refer to Newfoundland. They and their ancestors have managed to eke out a living on a rocky barren island in the North Atlantic Ocean. The cod fisheries are failing, as there are fewer fish in and around the famous and formerly abundant Grand Banks. Don't be surprised if the locals you meetl invite you in, offer you a glass of "Screech" (a local rum), a few jokes and maybe a delicious meal. Take them up on it. You'll never forget Newfoundland. You'll be back
