Place to see: Lower Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

Give us your poor...

Give us your poor...

This was taken on a ferry ride around lower Manhattan. The ride is awesome just because of the photo oppurtunity.

About this place:

A ride on one of the ferry boats that tour around Lower Manhattan is one of the best ways to see some of New Yorks historical landmarks and icons.
A walk on the Battery Park is a great way to see things too if you don't have your sea legs.

Give us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses longing to be free...
There are many tours that leave from Battery Park. The ferry ride we took stops for a minute in front of the statue so people on the boat can photograph it. I have been to New York many times and even lived there as a young adult but I have to say this is one of the nicest perspectives I have had of New York. I tried to imagine immigrants coming to this country for the first time... sitting in the New York Harbor waiting to dock... full of hopes and dreams. Some had to get off for inspection at Ellis Island and others got to go straight through to New York. Both sets of my grandparents went straight through to Pier A, paternal from Denmark and maternal from Sweden and Scotland. They were able to forgo the inspection process partly because of where they were from and partly because of class. I was sad for those people who did not go straight through. I have to say the experience moved me a bit.
