Peasant at the Alemany Farmers' Market

A local peasant girl purchases her weekly produce at San Francisco's Alemany Farmers' Market, held every Saturday morning, rain or shine.

About this place:

Alemany was a Farmer's Market decades before farmer's markets were cool. These days the Ferry Building market (on the Embarcadero) get's all the attantion, but the Ferry Building is all about the fancy — it's popular with tourists and affluent foodies alike. Great food, but too expensive for regular consumption. But the Alemany Farmer's Market is where regular locals shop.

The Alemany Farmer's Market takes place every Saturday, and it's best to arrive before 1 pm. It's also somewhat historic, in the sense that it traces it's roots to the Victory Gardens of World War II, and it has been at it's present location, in southeast Bernal Heights, since the early 1950s.

The crowd is an extremely international cross-section of San Franciscans, and it's not uncommon to hear dozens of languages being spoken on any given day. The food is always fresh and in season, and the prices are very reasonable.
