About this place:

This hostel is in a 15th century Anglo-Norman tower house that is the oldest hostel in Ireland. Opened in 1948, it is 8 miles outside of Kilkenny, and sleeps 52 visitors. The dining room is impressive, with a large fireplace and spiral stone steps going up to the dormitory.

The daughter of the former owner is said to haunt the castle, legend has it that she fell in love with a local Irish boy, and was locked up to keep her away from him and later killed by her father.

When I visited in June 2000, there were less than a dozen people staying that night, and most were in the downstairs dorm, leaving my friend and I to the upstairs tower dorm. It was not the most restful nights sleep i have ever had, it definitely feels like it's haunted! It was also really inexpensive, though i can't remember what the actual price was, but it's probably the cheapest way to stay in an actual castle! It is a bit outside town though, so unless you have a car, it might be less convenient.
