Cherish true wilder-ness: The winter of 2007-08 was the longest and snowiest in a decade in Greater Yellowstone. Several snowplows were broken while opening Yellowstone's south entrance. Up to half of the region's population of 4k+ bison are thought to have died due to the harsh winter. Just before Memorial Day, carcasses were everywhere, bear management staff were on high alert and the grizzlies, wolves and black bears were ravenous. NB: The top left corner of Wyoming is often the coldest spot in the Lower 48, and snow has been recorded every day of the year.

This was the first large animal we saw on our road trip through Yellowstone. The bison were so beautiful, and considering his size the land scape just seems to swallow him up!
