They've got both a covered and uncovered outdoor patio which sees a lot of use at night in the warmer months, with the sound of conversation occasionally interrupted by the sound of the Red Line El rumbling by.

About this place:

The Heartland is a warm and homey bohemian oasis in the Rogers Park neighborhood, and makes for a great hangout. Especially popular with the weekend breakfast crowd, it's still lively most nights due to frequent live performances of music and spoken word. The front rooms host the Buffalo Bar and an eclectic general store, and the dining room walls are usually hung with work from local artists. The menu is slightly pricey, but wholesome and vegetarian-friendly. It's also easy to get to, right off the northern end of the Morse Avenue red line El stop.

    A few years ago, when I lived in Chicago proper, I was a few blocks from the Heartland and grabbed dinner with friends there at least a couple times a month. Back then, the general store had a working photo booth and a huge rack to pick up local free papers, fliers for events and rallies, all sorts of stuff -- the best neighborhood community info stop. Hopefully that hasn't changed!
