Given the popularity of this most famous of Kyoto's tourist attractions, I'm suprised that even here, my pictures contain no trace of current human habitation.
The official name of this temple is Rokuonji.
The original, in all its ostentatious glory, was constructed by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in the 1300's, but this incarnation is much more recent: The previous structure was burned to the ground by a disgruntled monk in 1950.
