Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple formally known as Rokuonji. In 1397 construction started on the Golden Pavilion as part of a new residence for the retired shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu.
The official name of this temple is Rokuonji.
The original, in all its ostentatious glory, was constructed by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in the 1300's, but this incarnation is much more recent: The previous structure was burned to the ground by a disgruntled monk in 1950.
