Black Rock Desert Panorama

The size of the 400 square mile Black Rock Desert playa is hard to comprehend...when you're there standing on it, you don't quite get how big it is. It is one of the largest flattest place on earth and there is nothing in our everyday experience that compares.

About this place:

The Black Rock Desert is a dry lake bed in northwestern Nevada in the United States. Considered one of the flattest surfaces on the earth, the desert is part of the extended playa of the lake bed of prehistoric Lake Lahontan, which existed between 18,000 and 7,000 BC during the last ice age. During the lake's peak around 12,700 years ago, the desert floor was under approximately 500 feet (150m) of water.

The Black Rock Desert is where the land speed record of 633mph was set in 1983. The desert is also the home of several rocketry competitions as well as the annual Burning Man Festival.

The Black Rock Desert is a scenic destination like no other on Earth. It must be seen to be believed.
