I stuck my head into the bakery to take a picture and the young man said, "USA is #1. Afghanistan is #1" and offered me some freshly baked naan (bread).
Darul Aman Palace was destroyed in the early
1990's as rival mujahideen factions fought for
control of Kabul. Plans are currently
underway to rebuild Darul Aman Palace for
use as the permanent seat of Afghanistan's
parliament.
While the local men and children often solicited me to have their picture taken, clowning and posing, the women were more reticent. I approached a small group of women in burqas and signaled that I would like to take their picture.
