    Djúpavík is a sheltered bay in the Strandir district of northwest Iceland
    It is a remote region, largely untouched by modern developments where silence reigns and nature continues to shape a rugged, mountainous landscape.

    Djúpavík Hotel is a building that was formerly the living quarters for women working in a herring processing factory that was built in the bay but fell into disuse many years ago.

    Djúpavík leapt to fame in the 1930s when a group of businessmen built a herring factory in the bay. The factory operated until the early 1950s and now contains an exhibition recalling those exciting and prosperous days.

    There is plenty to do in and around Djúpavík.

    Located in the South of Iceland, Þórsmörk is a large valley divided by the glacial river Krossa. Accessible only to four wheel drive vehicles, it's remote location keeps this fantastic natural area truly pristine.

    It is possible to catch a ride to the valley's mouth on a charter offered by the company, Reykjavik Excursions.

    Famous trails leading in and out of Þórsmörk include the Fimmvorduhals trek through Þórsmörk's magnificent Godaland, and Iceland's most popular trail, the Laugavegur.

    Not to be missed are the park's small glacial lagoon, the Godaland area, and the narrow Stakkholtsgja canyon with a suprise waterfall at it's end.
